ELKHART — A woman who pleaded guilty to the charge of armed robbery was sentenced Thursday at Elkhart Circuit Court.

Abigail Pifer, 20, of Elkhart received an agreed-upon sentence of six years in prison and six years on probation.

Pifer pleaded guilty to the charge, a Class B felony, on Aug. 15.

Police arrested Pifer and Nicholas Chaplin, Feb. 1 after investigating a robbery at Low Bob’s Discount Tobacco Store, 51523 S.R. 19, on Jan. 25.

According to the probable cause for her arrest, employees identified Pifer and Chaplin from photographs obtained from surveillance cameras.

Employees told police two men and a woman came into the store and took an undisclosed amount of cash and cigarettes.

About a week later, police made a traffic stop on Chaplin and Pifer, and during plain examination of the vehicle, officers found items that matched the descriptions of what was taken from the store during the robbery.

Clifford Williams, Pifer’s attorney, said his client is making significant progress in her rehabilitation, and that she can count on support from her family.

“While working on her case I received letters from people who knew her. A lot of people believe in her,” Williams said.

Pifer, between emotional outbursts, said she was ready to move forward.

“I know it’s not going to happen again,” she said.

The incident at Low Bob’s Tobacco store in January is connected to a string of robberies that happened between Jan. 25 and Feb. 28 on the north side of Elkhart. Officers from the Elkhart Police Department and the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department investigated 11 robberies in that area.

Jacob Wing, 18; Timothy Cramer, 23; Jacob Estep, 23; and Sergio Rocha, 26, are also connected to some of the robberies. Their cases are pending in Circuit Court.
