Elkhart police officers involved in shooting identified
ELKHART — The Elkhart Police Department has identified the officers involved in a deadly shooting Sunday afternoon, Sept. 1.
Cpl. Bruce Anglemyer, Cpl. James Ballard and Sgt. Karl Miller were involved in the shooting in the 300 block of West Lusher Avenue.
Jaime Benavidez, 27, was shot and killed after he pointed a gun at the officers, according to a press release from the Indiana State Police.
The officers are all veterans of the department: Anglemyer has been on the force for 23 years, Ballard for 16 years and Miller for 12 years.
Officers responded at about 2:09 p.m. Sunday to the 300 block of West Hubbard Avenue to reports of a burglary. They chased two individuals south into the 300 block of West Lusher Avenue and arrested a 14-year-old boy.
Officers shot Benavidez after he pointed a gun at them near 328 W. Lusher.
Indiana State Police officers took over the case because the shooting involved members of the Elkhart Police Department.
Detectives interviewed the 14-year-old and released him to his parents. He was arrested on suspicion of resisting arrest, according to police.
