ELKHART — Five volunteer fire departments are battling a blaze at a Cleveland Township home near the Indiana-Michigan border.

Firefighters were dispatched around 10:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 23, to a home at 50599 Brooklyn Ave.

Neighbors Jimmy and Emma Reed called 911 when they saw smoke coming from the manufactured home. At one point, the back of the structure was engulfed in flames.

Firefighters were searching the home for any occupants. The Reeds say the home is occupied by a couple.

Richard Newman, fire chief of the Cleveland Township Fire Department, said firefighters have not found anyone in the home and are working to track down the occupants. The blaze was brought under control in about 45 minutes, he said.

Cleveland was assisted at the scene by units from Baugo, Osolo and Clay townships and the village of Edwardsburg, Mich.
