Middlebury bicyclist killed in crash

MIDDLEBURY — A man died from his injuries following an accident early Wednesday morning, July 24, on the east side of Elkhart County.

According to a press release from the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department, Elmer Miller, 64, of Middlebury, was riding his bicycle west on U.S. 20, on the north shoulder of the roadway.

Lyle Otto, 20, of Topeka, was driving an SUV west on U.S. 20 near C.R. 18 when the vehicle went off the road to the north side, striking Miller. The crash happened at about 4:40 a.m.

Miller died at the scene. Elkhart County coroner John White said Miller died of blunt force trauma. Otto did not require medical attention after the crash.

The Crash Investigation Team and the Elkhart County Fatal Alcohol Crash Team are investigating the incident. No enforcement action was taken at the time of the crash.
