ELKHART — The Elkhart Police Department continues to investigate the July 5 death of a dog after a firework exploded in its mouth.

Lt. John Hammel said officers plan to send the case to the Elkhart County Prosecutor’s office for possible charges by the end of the week.

Hammel said the suspects in the case are juveniles.

Police took a dog to the Humane Society of Elkhart County with severe facial injuries on Friday, July 5. The dog had to be euthanized because of the severity of its injuries. Witnesses told the officers that several children had been throwing lit fireworks at the dog. The dog picked one up in her mouth and it exploded.

The Humane Society of the United States on July 11 offered a $5,000 reward for information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of the responsible parties.
