ELKHART — The Elkhart Board of Public Safety is reviewing charges made against a firefighter who is accused of violating the city’s drug and alcohol policy.

In a meeting Tuesday, July 23, the board heard from Fire Chief Mike Compton, who said firefighter Geoffrey Crist tested positive for drugs during a random drug scan on employees. He did not provide more specifics on the incident, including what drugs the firefighter tested positive for.

According to a letter provided to the board of public safety, the fire department’s administrative office decided to suspend Crist for 30 days without pay.

The letter explains Crist was charged with misconduct pursuant to state law and rules provided by the city fire department.

Assistant Chief Shaun Edgerton said the administrative office received the test results on July 17. He said this has been the only time Crist was found to test positive in a drug exam. He said first-time violations of the drug and alcohol policy call for a 30-day suspension. A second violation will result in termination.

Although the disciplinary action has already been implemented by the fire department, the board of public safety can choose to modify the action. Crist can also request a hearing to give the board of public safety his account of the incident.
