ELKHART — A man was injured after he was thrown off a mo-ped when a car hit him Monday afternoon, July 1. But he has been treated and released from the hospital.

Anthony Gill, 22, of Elkhart, was taken in an ambulance to the hospital with injuries to his back. The accident happened at about 12:30 p.m. at the intersection of Vistula and Franklin streets.

According to a traffic report from the Elkhart Police Department, Gill was driving his mo-ped southwest on Vistula Street when he stopped at a light. A silver vehicle traveling behind Gill failed to stop, striking his mo-ped. Gill was thrown off his vehicle from the impact. He later told police he remembers stopping at the red light at the intersection, but he did not recall what happened minutes before or after the crash.

Two witnesses told police they saw a woman get out the car and walk to the driver of the mo-ped before getting back into her car and driving from the scene.

A police officer stopped Devon Goodwin, 20, of Elkhart, shortly after the crash and interviewed her. She denied having any involvement in the crash, but the officer saw pieces of the mo-ped in the grille of the car.

Police arrested Goodwin on preliminary charges of driving while never having obtained a driver’s license, a class C misdemeanor, and leaving the scene of an accident, a class D felony.
