CONSTANTINE — A Shipshewana man and a Middlebury woman were arrested on preliminary drug charges at approximately 2 a.m. Monday, July 1, after being followed by New England Road residents in Constantine Township.
According to a press release from the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department, the residents became suspicious of the pair after they believed they saw them attempting to commit larceny. The residents called the police and began to follow the pair when they drove away in their truck.
When deputies arrived they found the truck stopped behind a home on Beers Road and discovered the pair had fled on foot, the release said. The Sturgis Police K-9 unit was called in and tracked the pair to a nearby field where they were arrested on preliminary drug charges. Police did not indicate why drug charges are resulting from the arrest.
Michigan law enforcement officials do not release the names of persons arrested on preliminary charges until they have been arraigned.
