Hit-and-run accident being investigated

ELKHART — Police have arrested the driver who struck a mo-ped, injuring the driver, and fled the scene Monday afternoon.

Police and medics responded to the intersection of Franklin and Vistula streets shortly after 12:30 p.m. Monday, July 1 for hit-and-run accident involving a moped.

Police at the scene said a 22-year-old male had been driving southbound on Vistula Street and stopped at the stoplight at Franklin Street when he was rear-ended by a woman driving a gray Chrysler sedan.

A witness, who was stopped behind the mo-ped, said the suspect had cut in front of her to turn right onto Franklin and did not see the moped.

According to Elkhart City dispatchers, the driver of the mo-ped suffered a seizure after the crash. He was taken to the hospital with unknown injuries.

Elkhart Police Cpl. M. DeJong located the suspect vehicle and followed it until a marked patrol vehicle could make a traffic stop on. E. Hively Avenue at Morehouse Avenue, according to a news release from the Elkhart Police Department.

The driver, Devon D. Goodwin, 20, of Elkhart was arrested for operating a vehicle without ever receiving a license, a class C misdemeanor, and leaving the scene of an injury accident, a class D felony.
