GOSHEN — A man was flown to a hospital Tuesday evening, June 18, after being involved in a three-vehicle collision on the south side of Goshen.

Calvin Bontrager, 25, of Goshen has been discharged from Memorial Hospital in South Bend, said a spokesperson from the hospital.

First responders were called to the 1800 block of Lincolnway East at about 6 p.m. According to a crash report from the Goshen Police Department, Bontrager was riding a scooter south on Lincolnway East and was attempting to pass a truck by driving around it on the right side.

The driver of the truck, Brian Wendt, 61, of Isanti, Minn., told police he was turning right into the One Stop Gas Station on Lincolnway.

Bontrager ran into the truck and then hit a third vehicle driven by Rebecca Helmuth, 41, of New Paris, who was waiting at the gas station for traffic to pass to drive out onto Lincolnway.

Bontrager was ejected from the scooter and had incapacitating injuries, according to the report. He was flown to the hospital complaining of head pain.

The scooter was damaged beyond repair, the report said. Wendt’s truck had minor damages to the front, and Helmuth’s van did not show any damage.

Neither Wendt nor Helmuth was injured.
