ELKHART — A man who was shot in December died from his injuries at a hospital Saturday morning, June 15.

Sean Smith was shot in the face Dec. 8, 2012, at 52076 Brookstream Circle in Northlake Apartments, according to a report from the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department. Police confirmed reports from family members that he died this weekend.

Police and paramedics were called to the apartments at about 7:40 p.m. Dec. 8 and took Smith to Memorial Hospital in South Bend.

Witnesses told police they saw Smith allow three men into his apartment the evening of Dec. 8, and they were “hanging out” when one of the men shot him.

Sean Smith was an Elkhart Memorial High School graduate and served in the U.S. Army as a combat medic.

Lt. Travis Adamson, with the sheriff’s department, said charges in the case could change because of Smith’s death if someone is arrested.

“We would have to work with the prosecutor’s office to see if we would have to add more charges, or change the ones we have,” he said.

However, no one has been arrested in connection to the incident, and Adamson said the sheriff’s department can not release any information on the investigation.
