ELKHART — A jury found an Elkhart man guilty of strangulation and domestic battery Wednesday, June 12, following a two-day trial at Superior Court 1.
Edward Owens Jr., 41, was charged with the Class D felonies in August 2011. Owens faces up to three years in prison on each charge.
He was arrested Aug. 13, 2011, after deputies from the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department responded to a 911 call on the east side of the county.
Owens’ daughter told police her father was hitting her stepmother. She said she heard screaming, crying and objects falling in her father’s bedroom. Police arrived to find the victim crying, with scratches and red marks on her neck. The victim said Owens choked her during an argument in their bedroom before throwing her into the closet.
Within two or three weeks of his arrest, Owens bailed out from the Elkhart County Jail. Following the trial, the judge revoked Owens’ bond and sent him back to jail.
Owens’ sentencing hearing case is scheduled for 2 p.m. Aug. 1.
