Elkhart man taken to hospital following hit-and-run
ELKHART — Police are looking for the driver involved in an accident that sent an Elkhart man to the hospital Monday, May 13.
The accident happened at about 5:30 p.m. at the intersection of Indiana Avenue and Prairie Street. According to the accident report, Andrew Smith, 21, of Elkhart, was driving a mo-ped west on Indiana Avenue just west of Prairie Street, when he was rear-ended by a gold Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, which then left the scene.
Smith was taken to Elkhart General Hospital with a deep laceration on his face and injuries to his midsection. Upon further evaluation, it was found that Smith tested positive for opiates and marijuana. He also had a blood-alcohol content of 0.21 percent, more than double the legal limit.
Accounts from witnesses at the scene conflicted with one another. A witness told police Smith “had a road rage incident” and began yelling at someone before losing control of his mo-ped.
Another witness said Smith rear-ended another vehicle before losing control. A third witness told police a vehicle was trying to pass Smith when Smith lost control of the mo-ped and ran into the vehicle that was trying to pass him.
The report states that based on the evidence, “no definitive sequence of events or cause could be determined.”
Anyone with information about the crash can call the police department at 295-7070.
