ELKHART — A woman was taken to Elkhart General Hospital with a gunshot wound to her hand after a reported accidental discharge.

Police and an ambulance were dispatch at about 10:40 a.m. to the 600 block of Marion St. in Elkhart on reports of an accidental shooting.

Wefi Altimimi, owner of a store located on the corner of Sixth and Marion streets said he saw a woman running to the store with her hands to her stomach. He then realized she was holding one of her hands because she had shot a finger.

Altimimi said the woman is a regular customer at his store, and that he thinks she appeared to be pregnant. She lives just across the street on the same block, he said. Altimimi said he thinks the woman was playing with the gun and that she was carrying a bag with guns. When it went off, she ran to his store asking for napkins. He called 911.

Altimimi also saw a man run west on Marion Street from the scene with what he thought was the bag with guns. He saw that man talking with the woman just before the shooting.

A second person was shot in the hand later in the day.

Emergency dispatchers said an 88-year-old male suffered an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound to the hand shortly after 5 p.m. at a residence on American Way Circle.
