Bailey appears in court for initial hearing for murder charges
GOSHEN — A teenager arrested last week for the murder of a 76-year-old woman appeared for his initial hearing today, Jan. 3.
Luis Bailey, 17, of Elkhart, was brought to the Elkhart County Circuit Court. He is being charged with murder, a felony, in connection to the death of Norma Hopper.
Bailey faces up to 65 years in prison.
Judge Terry Shewmaker appointed Bailey a public defender after asking if he had money to hire a lawyer. Soft-spoken, Bailey said he did not.
Bailey was arrested Dec. 23, two days after Hopper was found dead in her residence, at 54640 Michael Drive, Elkhart.
An autopsy performed Dec. 22 revealed Hopper’s death was a homicide. The cause of her death was blunt force trauma to her head, according to a press release from the Elkhart County Prodecutor’s office.
Bailey’s pretrial hearing was scheduled for Jan. 31. His trial was scheduled for April 8.
