SOUTH BEND — Visit South Bend Mishawaka will soon have a more visible presence at many local events including University of Notre Dame football weekends.
The Golden Roamer, a 24-foot recreational vehicle, will debut Friday, Aug. 29, near the Joyce Center on the Notre Dame campus, complete with brochures for visitors detailing the area's offerings as well as satellite TV, Wi-Fi, charging stations and more.
The RV, or mobile visitor center, is built and customized by Elkhart-based Nexus RV, and has been in development for nearly a year.
"Since we don't have a street-level visitor's center where anybody can just walk in and gather any information that they need while visiting the area, we are going to kind of take it to them," said Lindsey Talboom, spokeswoman with Visit South Bend Mishawaka. It won't be used just for things like Notre Dame football weekends but at various festivals and events in the area and perhaps other cities as well.
It's not completely settled if it can be in the Notre Dame parking lot on Saturdays during games, yet, Talboom said. "It will be out there on Fridays when people are exploring the campus a little more."
In the past, Visit South Bend Mishawaka has had a presence outside the Eck Center on football weekends, Talboom said. "This is just going to be even bigger and better than that," she said.
The RV contains a refrigerator and sink inside, "so we will be able to stock it with drinks and things so it should be fun," she added.
Visit South Bend Mishawaka received a special allocation from its tax board, which funds the organization, to pay for the Golden Roamer. Talboom did not know the cost.
"This week is the official debut," she said. "We are going to hope to be able to really have it out at several events throughout the week at different events and different attractions. You name it, we are really open to having it out there.
"That's what it's for. We are really planning on having it out there a lot."
