A Middlebury recreational vehicle maker has added a third production line and joins the growing list of Elkhart area employers adding workers.

Grand Design RV hired 70 people from January through the end of February, increasing its employment from 375 to 445 workers. The company recently added a third production line and looks to hire 65 more people over the next three to six months, said Marty Friend, marketing and communications manager.

Expanding into a third building on Grand Design's 67-acre County Road 2 campus was needed to meet rising demand for the company's popular Reflection fifth-wheel towable RV, said Don Clark, president and co-owner.

"Since the start of our company, we have been able to provide approximately 500 new jobs to the Middlebury and surrounding communities," Clark said in a statement. "We feel blessed to have been able to attract the excellent employee base we now have."

Clark also said Grand Design RV anticipates opening an additional product line this year. In addition to the Reflection fifth wheel, the company also makes the higher-end Solitude fifth wheel and the Momentum fifth wheel toy hauler.

Clark and brothers Bill and Ron Fenech left major positions at Thor Industries in the second half of 2011 to launch Grand Design, and started operations in October 2012. Initially they planned to create 500 jobs by 2016, so they are well ahead of that pace.

The new hires will be "miscellaneous production associates," Friend said. He declined to disclose hourly pay rates for the new positions.
