The Elkhart Truth is celebrating its 125th birthday, and you are all invited to come celebrate. There will be events all week long (Aug. 2-9), culminating in a Celebrate Elkhart Block Party on Saturday, Aug. 9.
Chip Lewis at Elkhart’s Iechyd Da Brewing Company has brewed up a special beer just for the occasion. The first tapping of Truth Serum (4.8% ABV, Nut Brown Ale) will be at the brewery on Tuesday, Aug. 5, starting at 6 p.m.
Eric Strader, one of The Elkhart Truth’s community bloggers
, writes about craft beer with a focus on the Michiana area.
Yesterday I had the chance to sit down with Summer Lewis and talk about Truth Serum. Earlier in the day, Chip had transferred it to the brite tank, so it had not settled and was not yet carbonated, but we did have a little taste. The style is a Southern English Nut Brown Ale, which is a bit sweeter than its American counterpart. Chip’s version was brewed with all Fuggle hops, lots of caramel malt and an English yeast strain.
If you are looking for an over-the-top hoppy or high ABV anniversary beer, you will need to wait until another anniversary. Instead, Truth Serum was brewed to be very approachable, with a low, sessionable ABV and a flavor to be enjoyed by all. It is fairly dark, but when it’s fully carbonated will actually drink lighter than it looks. There is a lot of good, roasted malt flavor, and the hops take a backseat in this brew. I’m really looking forward to tasting the finished product. Truth Serum will probably be on tap most of the week after Tuesday evening and will also be on tap at Saturday’s block party.
Check out the photos above to see Iechyd Da’s current tap list. I enjoyed a Mill Pond IPA (7.5 percent ABV) in the beer garden in between downpours yesterday. The brewery has a nice selection of styles on tap, including St. David’s Welsh Ale on the hand pull. Check out the photo of the brew board above to see what will be coming up on tap soon.
If you’re planning a trip to the brewery, you should know that it will be closed Aug. 11 through 18. Not only will this allow Chip and Summer their first (and well-deserved) vacation since construction started on the brewery, but will provide the couple with a few days to put an additional brite tank in their serving cooler. But don’t worry – when they reopen, they will have plenty of beer on tap.
You can also enjoy Iechyd Da’s beer while strolling through Wellfield Botanic Gardens, perusing fine art, listening to music and sampling tasty foods at Taste of the Gardens.
Iechyd Da Brewing Company is located at 317 N. Main St. in downtown Elkhart. Hours are from 3 to 10 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday through Saturday, and noon to 8 p.m. Sunday. Because its dining area isn’t separated from the bar, the brewery is a 21-and-over establishment
In other local beer news, Dark Horse Brewing Co. variety IPA packs just hit the shelves at Chalet Part Shoppe. The Chicago Avenue location received the largest quantity (33 cases), but you can find the the variety packs at other locations. The packs include Crooked Tree IPA and three single hop variants using Falconers Flight, Cascade and Apollo hops. And if you didn’t get a chance to check out the premiere of Dark Horse Nation on HISTORY this past Tuesday, you can still check it out on Hulu by clicking here.
