In keeping with my last post’s theme of canned beer, here is one you will not want to miss. The seasonal return of Grapefruit Jungle (IPA, 7.5% ABV, IBUs 77) will take place at Sun King Brewing’s 5th Anniversary Party on Saturday, June 28th. This is a limited release, and in the past, it has sold out quickly.

The anniversary party will include tappings of other specialty beers throughout the day, along with some of Indianapolis’ favorite food trucks. Tickets for the event are $10 and can be purchased at MOKB Presents.

Last year Michiana received a small quantity of Grapefruit Jungle – Chalet Party Shoppe stores received four cases between all their stores (a case from Sun King is four 4-packs of 16 oz. cans, so that is a total of only 64 cans), and City Wide Liquor in South Bend also got a limited quantity.  Most likely there will be a limit on purchases per customer this year. Fiddler’s Hearth was the only local pub in the past to receive draft, so let’s hope that we see more draft options this year.

Grapefruit Jungle is West Coast Style IPA brewed with one pound of hops in every barrel. It was created by owner and head brewer Dave Colt to showcase Pacific Northwest hops. I can still recall the huge citrus nose (hence the name), with lots of tropical fruit and pine in the flavor. It is definitely a hop head’s delight.

Sun King’s mission statement: Enriching the lives of Hoosiers one pint at a time.

“When we set out to create Sun King, we wanted to focus on continually crafting seasonal and specialty beers that complement the time of year and keep beer lovers engaged,” said Dave Colt.  “It doesn’t seem like all that long ago we were working feverishly to get things in order for our first brew, but it feels like a lifetime considering the feverish pace of our growth. We are incredibly fortunate to have so much support from the people the local community!”

To learn how Bill Haley's Rock Around the Clock and the 1955 movie release of Blackboard Jungle were the inspiration behind this beer, check out the YouTube video above.  According to the brewery’s website, Grapefruit Jungle is as revolutionary as Rock & Roll itself.
