Celebrate American Craft Beer Week at these locations around Michiana

This week, you can celebrate American Craft Beer Week with all sorts of activities and beer tappings around Michiana. Find out how you can win a handmade Bell’s Brewery mug from Hop Notes here.

Posted on May 13, 2014 at 4:14 p.m.

American Craft Beer Week began yesterday, and I celebrated by opening a bottle of Lagunitas Hop Stoopid (double IPA, 8% ABV). The beer just arrived this past week, and at under $5 for a 22 oz. bottle, it’s a great deal for a great beer. The double IPA is more on the bitter end, with a fairly dank aroma. A fruity flavor follows, with hints of mango and apricot.

At the Chubby Trout sometime this week, you will find Bell’s Quinannan Falls Special Lager (6.5% ABV), New Holland Dragon’s Milk Reserve with roasted chiles (barrel aged stout, 11% ABV), Three Floyds Arctic Panzer Wolf (imperial IPA, 10% ABV, IBUs 100) and Gumball Head (American wheat, 5.6% ABV).

Miles Lab will be pulling out a keg of Bell’s Hopslam (imperial IPA, 10% ABV) that it stashed away and will be putting it up against a keg of Three Floyds Zombie Dust (American Pale Ale, 6.2% ABV, IBUs 50).

Mad Anthony Brewing Company will be serving up its RyePA. According to its website, this is a hybrid beer style of the company’s own making, combining the rich spiciness of American-grown rye grains with a traditional American IPA. It is hopped multiple times and is dry hopped in the fermenter, with a single variety of hop called Azacca, giving this IPA a distinctive flavor and aroma. It is close to 7% ABV with 70 IBUs. This will be available at all four Mad Anthony tap rooms.

And just in case you haven’t already heard, Scotty’s Brewhouse in Mishawaka will be tapping Founders’ KBS (imperial stout aged in oak bourbon barrels, 11.2% ABV, IBUs 70) at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.

Many of you may also know that I am a potter, and one of my favorite accounts is Bell’s Brewery. I have been making pottery mugs and pints for the Bell’s General Store for several years now.

Here is your chance to win the 24 oz., Bell’s handled mug in the photo above. I am going to keep this giveaway for local readers in the Michiana area. Just be the first person to email me at Eric@EricStraderPottery.com with the correct answer to this question: What is the name of the Kalamazoo baseball team that is part of the Northwoods League, of which Bell’s Brewery has agreed to be the craft beer sponsor through 2018?

I will have more giveaways coming this week, including a gift card from Constant Spring and Iechyd Da Brewing Co. Good luck, and enjoy American Craft Beer Week.
