For the last 10 months, Chip and Summer Lewis have been working on a plan to add an outdoor patio to their popular brewpub at 317 N. Main St., Elkhart.
A house that was just to the north of the business is being torn down. The photo above shows the work happening Monday, Oct. 28.
"We're pretty excited about it," she said. They told their staff members late last week. "They're very excited about it."
She shared the news with a few folks on Saturday and Eric Strader blogged about it. Today she added some details.
The house to the north is coming down and the patio will take up most of the lot. It'll be 1,600 square feet, have a pergola for shade and an elevated stage for musical acts. The nearest houses are a block away and landscaping will help mitigate any noise issues, she said. The indoor dining room, which is nearly the same size as the patio will be, can be noisy and the patio could help that, in my opinion.
The door to the patio will be at the east end of the bar and could be installed before the end of the year. As winter turns to spring, the patio will be put in because the goal is to have it open by the second anniversary on June 1.
They're also adding some equipment to the brewery in the back to be able to make more beer, but aren't expanding the brewery or kitchen otherwise.
Iechyd Da is already busy, already a vibrant part of downtown Elkhart. I think a well-designed outdoor patio is only going to help that.
Are you excited about an outdoor patio at Iechyd Da? Will you use it?
