The Nappanee Apple Festival's signature 600-lb. apple pie is in the running to win the Indiana Office of Tourism Development's contest for "best signature fall food item."

The pie is made each September at the annual Nappanee Apple Festival.

The Nappanee pie is up against another apple pie -- a 9-footer made at the Mt. Zion Applefest -- as well as blueberry ice cream (Marshall County Blueberry Festival); various chili recipes from the Red Gold Chili Cook-off; Persimmon pudding from the Mitchell Persimmon Festival, and others.

The winner will be determined by whichever food item gets the most votes from the public.

Results will be posted on the department's website Nov. 8.

Food is prepared at a past beer dinner hosted by LaSalle Kitchen and Tavern.
