Reader voting in Salad Quest is underway.
Since March, I’ve been searching for the best salad in Elkhart County.
I’ll pick a winner from among the four finalists of the 20 restaurants I visited.
You can pick a winner from among them or the five others who were nearly finalists.
You can vote online at goo.gl/L98ihE
Or you can find the ballot in Monday’s edition of the newspaper (or another) and send it in.
All the votes will be counted Friday, Oct. 25, and the winner or winners will be announced Monday, Oct. 28.

Some searches for the best of Elkhart County have picked a single dish from a restaurant as the winner. South Side Soda Shop’s lemon meringue pie won the first search.
Other searches have picked the best restaurant for a dish. Happy Dance won Cupcake Quest and Heinnie’s won Steak Quest.
Salad Quest will be like the latter. How a restaurant handles greens, makes its dressings and prepares ingredients for its salads carries through all the salads. And when you order a salad, you usually make choices in the variables. So I’m picking the best place to go for salad and you can too.
You can vote online once a day and send in as many ballots as you want.
The new Jo Jo’s Pretzels location at the corner of Main and Washington streets in Goshen is progressing, but isn’t quite ready to open.
Owner Levi King said the painting, installing equipment and getting inspections took a bit longer than he anticipated.
“It’s just an ongoing project,” he said.
In addition, Joanna King, Levi’s spouse, created a tile mosaic of a twisted pretzel in the floor.
The couple has had a Shipshewana pretzel shop since 1989 and is now opening a second location in the former Electric Brew, which moved across Washington Street.
Levi had hoped to open by August or September. “Currently I hope to open up by Nov. 1, but don’t hold me to it,” he said.
The Elkhart Truth’s Zombie Walk is happening Friday, Oct. 25. What’s that got to do with food or drink? Brains won’t be on the menu of Elkhart restaurants and bars, but a pub crawl following the showing of a zombie movie at the Lerner Theater will feature drink specials.
New Paradigm Brewing, Iechyd Da Brewing Co., Cappy’s Northside, Bowly’s Crystal Bar, Crimaldi’s, Simeri’s and Five Star Dive Bar are creating drinks for the evening. I’ll have a rundown available on the blog in the next few days.
The pub crawl will start about 9:30 p.m.
The Local, a new collaborative at 211 S. Fifth St., Goshen, will have a four-course craft-to-table meal at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25, according to organizers. Viand Chef Services will provide the food. You get to take home the dinnerware made by a local artisan that you use to eat and drink. The event will have live music and is BYOB. The cost is $80 and you can make reservations by calling 504-377-8223.
LaSalle Kitchen & Tavern is opening this week on the third floor of the LaSalle Grill building, 115 W. Colfax, South Bend.
The area’s first gastropub will have a variety of beverages and chefs making high-end pub food in a casual setting.
A variety of events are planned to benefit charities this week after opening Monday, Oct. 21. A variety of specials are planned, according to a press release.

Martin’s Super Markets will have pumpkin decorating from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, at all locations. Kids will be able to choose a pumpkin and then decorate, not carve, a pumpkin, according to a press release. Kids will be encouraged to join Martin’s free Kids Club.
Indiana State Police and Red Robin Gourmet Burgers restaurants raised around $15,000 for Special Olympics. Ten Indiana Red Robin restaurants had Tip-A-Cop events. Eight of the 10 restaurants raised $13,962 and two others had yet to report the totals, according to a press release.
