ELKHART — Elkhart is getting a second brewpub.
Depending how you count, this is the third, but Mad Anthony’s never brewed here and didn’t make it. Iechyd Da is doing well.
But a half-block south from the former Mad Anthony’s at Harrison Landing, four guys are taking over and opening New Paradigm Brewing Co. You can try a sample of their brews when they take over Tuesday, Oct. 1 (or at ArtWalk Wednesday) but it’ll be a number of months until they replace the stage with a brewery and have pints to offer.
Brandon Stanley, Scott Gruver, Bob Newman and Josh Hibshman signed paperwork last week to become owners of Harrison Landing. Attorneys Bill Lavery and Pat Whisler opened the place at 600 S. Main St., Elkhart, in November 1994.
“We’re ready to be done and are very excited for our friends who are doing the New Paradigm Brewing,” Lavery said.
The attorneys will keep practicing upstairs and Lavery said they’ll be “very good customers.”
Stanley said they will be in the process of transferring licenses in the coming months and will start work on making the menu more fresh and local.
The group has about 12 beers, many of them Belgian style, that it brews on a regular basis.
“We’ve got a great lineup of beers coming,” he said.
Until they have New Paradigm beer, other craft beers will inhabit the taps.
Rise ‘N Roll Bakery is rolling out a new way for its customers to get the great donuts in the morning.
Jeff Petermann, marketing manager, said starting Oct. 21 the location along U.S. 20 east of Middlebury will have a walk-up window open from 4 to 7 a.m. The bakery opens at 7 a.m. at this point.
“Customers have asked for earlier hours for a while,” he said. Construction on the new window is done.
The store closes at 5 p.m. Monday and Thursday, Friday and Saturday and 6 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday.
Sunnyside Food Mart is closed for remodeling and the Elkhart County Health Department indicated that it can’t sell food until it gets its license back.
A press release from the department last week indicated that owner Jaswinder Kaur disregarded an order from a health officer to submit plans prior to remodeling, had unsanitary conditions and didn’t correct critical violations by the end of inspection.
Mike Hoover of the department said the store was in a “state of disarray” with construction debris on the floor, no functioning restroom and even mice feces.
Kaur submitted plans on Thursday for the remodeling, Hoover said. But the store at 1502 Benham Ave. is closed for now.
Don’t forget about Elkhart Dining Days. Eighteen restaurants will be offering specials at lunch or dinner from Oct. 4-12. A donation of $2 from every dining days meal will be given to Church Community Services.

Construction on the new Evil Czech Brewery in Mishawaka is underway, according to a press release from Ancon Construction. The company is renovating about 9,000 square feet of the former Mishawaka Brewing Co. and adding about 1,500 square feet.
Construction is also underway on the new Wings Etc. location in Dunlap.
Belmont Beverage/Chalet Party Shoppe donated about $5,000 to the Boys & Girls clubs in Elkhart, Goshen and Middlebury from its wine, spirits and beer tasting in July, according to a press release.
Pizza Depot and Stoney Creek Winery are having a fall harvest dinner and wine tasting at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 21. The cost is $65 per couple. The last day for reservations is Oct. 7. You can call 574-642-4229 to get them.
Greater Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church, 1829 Oakland Ave., Elkhart, is having a barbecue again at 11 a.m. Friday and Saturday until the meat is gone. I’ll have tickets to give away this week on the blog and Facebook.
