Departments include baking, food preservation, needlework and photography.
The Elkhart County 4-H Fair Home and Family Arts Department is offering open class exhibits and special contests to Michiana residents ages 8 and older.
The departments offering these opportunities are baking, cake decorating, children’s corner, clothing construction, creative arts, food preservation (canning and miscellaneous), handicrafts, needlework, photography and quilts (machine-quilted and hand-quilted).
Special awards include Ball® & Kerr® Adult Food Preservation Award, the RED STAR® Yeast Award and the Apron contest.
Entry fee is $1 per entry, due at check-in. To receive five daily fair passes, participants must enter at least five entries and pay a $30 entry fee. This allows participants to enter up to 20 items at no additional cost. Participants can enter more than 20 entries for an additional $1 per entry. Only one entry may be submitted per class. Participants may enter in multiple classes.
All entries (excluding baking, cake decorating and special contests) should be brought to the Home and Family Arts building between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. Monday, July 15.
Baking and cake decorating entries are due between 7:30 and 11 a.m. Thursday, July 18.
Special contest entries are due the day of the contest and do not require pre-entry. The entry fee serves as paid admission at the gate. Exhibits must stay in the Home and Family Arts building until Monday, July 29, when they must be removed between 2 and 6 p.m.
Pre-registration is not required. Participants should bring their entries to the Home and Family Arts building the day of check-in. Entries should include a written, printed or typed recipe.
All recipes become property of the Elkhart County Extension Homemakers, who reserve the right to use them for fair publicity.

Baking contest information: This year’s President’s Baked Item is German chocolate cake. Participants should bring their recipe and cake to check-in between 11 and 11:45 a.m. Thursday, July 18. Judging begins at noon and entries must be picked up by 1 p.m. A prize of $10 will be given to the winner.
A new contest, Celebrate the Year of Popcorn, is sponsored by Yoder’s Popcorn of Topeka. Participants can enter one item in each of the following categories: popcorn balls, flavored-savory, flavored-sweet and flavored-caramel. Entries should have a minimum of six servings. Check-in will be from 11 to 11:45 a.m. Saturday, July 20. Judging will be at noon.
The Dairy Delicious contest will accept entries that are cooked or baked prior to entry or can be refrigerated and then allowed to warm. Entries must include at least two dairy foods. Each entry must have a minimum of six servings. Check-in is from 11 to 11:45 a.m. Monday, July 22. Judging will be at noon.
The Longest Apple Peel contest is open to adults Tuesday, July 23. The winner will produce the longest unbroken peel. The apples and peeler will be provided. Check-in is at 11 a.m. and the contest starts at 11:15 a.m. Participants are asked to read the contest rules and regulations.
The 30th Annual Senior Citizen’s Cookie Bake-off will be Tuesday, July 23. Participants ages 62 and older may submitted one item each in the bar, drop and formed cookie categories. No brownies are allowed. Each entry should have six cookies. Check-in will be from 9 to 11 a.m. with judging at 11:30 a.m. Items must be picked up by 1 p.m.
This year’s Anything Goes contest will require participants to use red potatoes as the main ingredient in any dish. The dish can be brought to the Home and Family Arts Building between 11 and 11:45 a.m. Wednesday, July 24. Judging is at noon. The top four entries will receive gift certificates from Sweet Corn Charlie Produce, the contest’s sponsor.
Entries in the Bursting with Blueberries contest must use blueberries as the dish’s main ingredient. Check-in is between 11 and 11:45 a.m. Friday, July 26. Judging is at noon. Winners will receive gift certificates from Blueberry Park, the contest’s sponsor.
The Best of Michiana Ribs and Byler-Lienhart Cook-Off will be Saturday, July 27. Check-in begins at 9 a.m. All food must be ready for judging by 11:30 a.m. and judging will be at noon. Participants are asked to read the contest rules and regulations. Winners will receive cash prizes.
The Great Homemade Ice Cream Crank-Off will be in front of the Home and Family Arts building Saturday, July 28. Check-in is from 10 to 11 a.m. The crank-off will be at 11:15 a.m. and must finish by noon for judging. Participants can enter individually or as a team of three or less. First, second and third place winners will receive cash prizes.
