ELKHART — This weekend's Oktoberfest in downtown Elkhart will feature a Chili Cook-Off Tasting once again on Saturday.
Pillars of Elkhart will have a fall festival that will feature chilis from at least nine restaurants and the Elkhart Fire Department.
The event from 1 to 7 p.m. in Central Park will also include a cornhole tournament, a family bike ride, a beer tent, live music and a bunch of activities for kids. But from 1 to 4 p.m., anyone 11 and older paying $5 can sample all the chilis, according to contest organizer Patrizia Staltari. Children age 10 and younger are allowed to eat free.
As of Friday, the restaurants registered to compete were 523 Tap & Grill, Around the corner Cafe, Iechyd Da Brewing Co., McCarthy's, Charlie's Butcher Block, Massimo's Pizzeria, Lucchese's, ModMex, Sports Time Family Pub & Grill and Elkhart Fire Department.
Last year, Miles Lab took the judges' award and McCarthy's won the people's choice award.
Ÿ Appleberry's is no more at Linway Plaza in Goshen. The restaurant closed recently. The spot has also housed Backyard Barbecue and Pete's Fabulous Fish.
Ÿ Poor Tony's closed again on West Franklin Avenue in Elkhart. It was a pizza place briefly, but that closed and the building could be torn down, according to co-owner Ann Zimmerman.
Ÿ Knights of Columbus from Our Lady of the Lake Church will have its third annual fish dinner from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Oct. 13. What sets this apart is the fish is pan-fried pan fish that's caught locally. The cost is $8 per person, $5 for kids ages 5 to 12 and free for ages 4 and younger.
Ÿ The last barbecue of the year at the Greater Bethlehem Baptist Church is Friday and Saturday, starting at 11 a.m. each day. You can get chicken, ribs, tips or sometimes sausage at 1829 Oakland Ave., Elkhart. I'll give away tickets this week on the Dining a La King Facebook page.
