Farm to Table Dinner was a hit

A first-time food event raised nearly $60,000 for Family Christian Development Center.

The Nappanee agency that has a food pantry, clothing closet and a variety of programs to help those in need had 300 people for the Farm to Table Dinner Auction on Aug. 11. A number of chefs and restaurateurs worked with farmers to produce courses. The chefs helped each other plate the food for the series of courses.

A live auction raised more money. A silent auction also raised funds.

Dozens of volunteers helped, according to a press release on the event at Coppes Commons.

“The support we received for this event is just overwhelming,” said Karen Stoltzfus, executive director at FCDC. “We are humbled and honored.”

I wasn't able to get there this time, but it's likely there will be another. What was very cool about the event is how many food providers agreed to help, how the stories of the food got told, and how it helped an agency that does good work in the southern part of Elkhart County. Family Christian Development Center served 12,842 people last year. This will help them meet important needs.

Ÿ Iechyd Da Brewing Co. changed its Sunday hours around the time the column on it appeared. It's now open from noon to 8 p.m. Sundays, with the kitchen closing at 7 p.m. Business doubled the first week of the new hours, said Chip Lewis, who owns the business with his wife, Summer. The couple are also celebrating winning a Fairbanks Award from the Greater Elkhart Chamber of Commerce. The award honors beautification efforts. Chip and Summer did a masterful job renovating a vacant storefront at 317 N. Main St., Elkhart.

Reader Alice Roth wanted to know whether the brewing company's Welsh theme came from family connections or travel. Chip said it's the former. His family emigrated from Wales in 1635.

Ÿ Jon Johnson has a new business in Elkhart called Carry-Out King. It will pick up food from a restaurant and deliver it to you. The cost is $2 for the first mile from the restaurant and $1 each mile after that. A minimum $10 order is required. The service is available from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. Ÿ Reader Lynne Riggs wants to know if a restaurant in the area has great Polish food. River Inn in Bristol served Polish food but is closed. Are there restaurants in the area that you favor for kielbasa and pierogi? If so, tell me and I'll share your answers.

Ÿ There are fireworks tonight at Covaleski Stadium. You can't eat those but there's an event during the Silver Hawks game for someone needing a ballpark food fix. It's Belly Buster Night, with all-you-can-eat hot dogs, hamburgers, peanuts and popcorn for $12. The cost to your health may be much greater depending on how far you take it.
