Crowl top dunker, Schermerhorn best 3-point shooter at fair

    Seven 3-on-3 teams were also crowned on the last day of basketball activity.

    GOSHEN — Two individuals and seven teams were recognized for their court prowess Thursday, July 24, at the Elkhart County 4-H Fair.

    The dunk contest was won by Matt Crowl, a 6-foot-7 player at Northwood University in Midland, Mich., and 2013 White Pigeon High School graduate. Judges gave him 71 out of a possible 90 points on three dunks.

    Drew Schermerhorn took top honors in the 3-point shooting contest. After Schermerhorn and Jonathan Wilkinson tied with 16 shots in one minute in the first round, Schermerhorn won 15-8 in a shoot-off.

    Team Gipson (19-30 Men), Team Schermerhorn (16-18 Boys), Team L. Miller (13-15 Boys), Team Sharick (10-12 Boys), Team Schrock (16-and-over Women), Team McKinley (13-15 Girls) and Team Shoup-Hill (10-12 Girls) also prevailed on the courts next to the Farmstead of Yesteryear.

    10-12 Boys: Team Sharick (Nolin Sharick, John McCoy, Jaylyn Miller) def. Team Gingerich.

    16-and-over Women: Team Schrock (Haley Schrock, Jenna Kieper, Kelsie Peterson, Haley Richardson) def. Team Bechtel.

    13-15 Girls: Team McKinley def. Team Miller.

    10-12 Girls: Team Shoup-Hill (Bryann Shoup-Hill, Kathryn Detweiler, Megan Gallagher, Jillian Litwiller) def. Team Krebs.

    Dunk champion: Matt Crowl.

    3-point champion: Drew Schemerhorn.
