Percussion ensemble Junk Rock Recycling Band took a trip to the Elkhart County 4-H Fair, and Pennsylvanian drummer Josh Lawrence said it’s the farthest west they’ve ever been. He’s just one person out of a 15-member group that travels around the country to drum on various objects and teach the public about recycling.
Today, there are three of them roaming around the fairgrounds. They wheel along a cart stacked with oil drums, a trash can and plastic tubes. Junk Rock can set up their instruments in minutes and entertain a crowd by banging on everything within arm’s length.
The three drummers rattle away at their instruments, dancing on the dusty fairground sidewalk. They spin around each other, sharing their cans and drums. They tap a beat over each other’s arms. They juggle their drum sticks in the air, laughing and smiling throughout the whole performance.
“I really like what I call our strolling sets like what we’re doing right now, where we just pop down and we’re really close to the people.” Lawrence said.
