Nice weather, strengthened economy brought large weekend fair crowds

More than 30,000 people visited the Elkhart County 4-H Fair on Saturday, July 19 and ticket sales that day were the best since the first Saturday of the fair in 2005.

What great start for the Elkhart County 4-H Fair. Ideal weather and the 3 Doors Down concert helped bring in some of the best numbers in nearly 10 years.

According to the gate count, 31,841 people took to the fairgrounds on Saturday, July 19.

That’s how many people actually went through the gates, including vendors and others working at the fair, Mary Nisly, fair director of ticket takers, said on Monday morning.

She’s still working on figuring out how many people came to the fair on Sunday, July 20, which was free admission day and generally one of the busiest days of the entire fair. Sunday numbers likely won’t be available for a few days because attendance on Sunday is calculated by parking and the fair has a new parking system this year.

Sharon Wogoman, ticket committee chair, said ticket sales on Saturday were the best the fair has seen since 2005.

"If the weather is good, they come out," she said Monday, "And we had a phenomenal concert."

3 Doors Down performed on Saturday night, starting off this year’s concert lineup that included Francesca Battistelli, who performed Sunday.

The Monday, July 21 concert is Tyler Farr and Parmalee, Tuesday features Danielle Bradbery and the Swon Brothers and Wednesday is the last concert with Justin Moore and Joey Hyde.
