Elkhart County 4-H Fair attempts world record with food drive

The Elkhart County 4-H Fair’s trying to collect the most food possible this year to break a Guinness World Record.

The Elkhart County 4-H Fair needs to collect more than 600,000 pounds of food on Sunday, July 20 to break a current world record for most food collected by a food drive in one day.

The fair had a food drive last year, where people brought cans of food and dropped them off as they enter the fairgrounds.

But this will be bigger.

Shelly Steury, co-coordinator of the drive, said her main objective in attempting the world record is to get more people to participate.

“We’re excited to try it – no matter what it will be a success for Church Community Services,” she said, adding that all food collected will go to the food bank at CCS.

The current Guinness World Record for most food collected in a day is held by the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics Food Drive, which collected 559,885 pounds of food in Durham, N.C., on March 5, 2011.

Steury’s not sure exactly how many pounds the fair’s food drive collected last year but said topping 600,000 would be a significant increase.

The food has to come in during a 24-hour period, but the fair’s food drive committee is collecting money ahead of time that can be used to purchase food on the day of the drive.

Someone will also need to submit 24 hours of continuous video footage showing the food being collected to Guinness World Records as evidence. Steury said the food drive committee is hoping someone local will volunteer to do that.

Here’s a few ways to donate to the world record attempt before the fair even starts:

Fair Bike Path

• Participate in a bike ride from downtown Goshen to the fairgrounds on Friday, June 6 (Map shown above). Registration will be from 5:30 to 6p.m. in the public parking lot by Interra Credit Union, 300 W. Lincoln Ave. Bikers are asked bring cash donations for the food drive.

• Mail a donation or drop it off at the fair office, 17746-D County Road 34. Checks should be made out to Elkhart County 4-H Fair Food Drive.

• Keep an eye out for donation bins at Martin’s Supermarkets locations in Elkhart County. Martin’s is a sponsor of the food drive and will be “making it easy for people to participate” in several ways, according to Steury.
