Federal transportation officials extend rest requirement exemption for propane haulers
Federal transportation officials agreed to extend a rest requirement exemption for propane haulers to allow them to obtain more fuel in light of a propane shortage.
The U.S. Department of Transportation has agreed to extend an exemption from work rest rules for propane haulers as the propane shortage continues, according to Rep. Jackie Walorski's office.
The federal regulation normally limits the consecutive hours propane haulers are allowed to work, but the agency has temporarily suspended the rule as propane haulers have had to drive longer distances to obtain loads of the fuel. Marketers are also making more trips to fill residential home heating tanks because they have placed fill limits on customers to conserve propane in light of the shortage.
The move extends the rule exemption expiration from Feb. 11 to March 1.
Last week the Indiana congresswoman sent the agency a letter, signed by other members of the state's congressional delegation, seeking the extension.
