Hello. I’m Tommie Lee.
If you tune in to 1340 AM WTRC this morning expecting to find my friend Mark McGill and Michiana’s Morning News…you aren’t going to find him there.
Instead, you’ll find me.
Mark is still on the air, don’t worry. He still does his show on Michiana’s News Channel, a fine radio station that has kept me nice and busy for the last year or so as their afternoon news anchor. That was a job I dearly enjoyed, because I’ve always been something of a news junkie anyway.
For several years…when my job chiefly consisted of saying obvious things like Now Here’s Led Zeppelin…I always followed the news in my regular life. Having the chance to anchor the news for Casey Hendrickson was a great opportunity for me. Now, though, I get to take it a step further.
Starting today, 1340 AM is no longer simulcasting Michiana’s News Channel. You've probably read something about that right here, as well as on the front page of The Elkhart Truth on Wednesday.
Before you panic, let me assure you that if you are a fan of Glenn Beck or Rush Limbaugh of Sean Hannity...you will still hear them on 1340 AM at their appropriate times. Fox News Radio will still keep you abreast of the latest developments throughout the day. You’ll still have your Ag reports, and all the other programming you’ve been enjoying on 1340 AM for a while now.
However…that signal is pointing its mic squarely at Elkhart County now. As of today, Truth Radio 1340 is on the air. A station focused on Elkhart, Goshen, Middlebury, and all the other communities that we call home.
We’re keeping all of the programming from Michiana’s News Channel except for our friend Mark. Elkhart County is going to have its own morning show…the Truth Radio Early Edition. It will be on the air every weekday morning from 6 to 9, and I’ve been given the honor of hosting it.
We’ll spend three hours talking to you and with you, rather than “at” you. Think of the Early Edition as the radio version of the Elkhart Truth. You can open the paper and read Angelle’s coverage of a great concert coming to the Lerner…and hear her talk about it at the same time. You can hear Bill Beck talk about Goshen Football while you look at the preview he wrote up in the sports page. The names you hear on the show on a regular basis will be the same ones who have been reporting on Elkhart County for you for a long time. No one knows the stories better than the journalists of The Elkhart Truth. And after the show…I’ll post the audio from those stories right here on this page…so you don’t miss anything while you’re getting breakfast ready for the kids.
You’ll also hear us talk to people in the community. Elected officials, people affected by the stories that happen here…even you and your neighbors. Reach out to us on social media, and you might possibly hear your comment thrown into the mix. Truth Radio 1340 is your radio station. I just get to push the buttons.
A little about me: I’ve been in radio for 25 years. I was an Air Force brat who grew up in Nevada, Northern Michigan, and South Dakota before my father retired back to Stevensville. With the exception of a year spent in Colorado…I’ve lived in SW Michigan or NW Indiana since 1990. Before I started at Michiana’s News Channel, I was at its predecessor, as one-half of WAOR’s Tommie & the Bartender morning show. I’ve been on other radio stations in the area as well, even spending a little time on Froggy Radio several years ago using the name “Kevin Murphy” every night.
What I bring to this thing is a deep love for the news and the desire to make sure you are informed and entertained every morning when you hit that first cup of coffee and try to make sense of the world. Backing me up is the incredible journalism of The Elkhart Truth, and the amazing resources of Michiana’s News Channel. Every single person on both of those staffs loves this work as much I. It’s an honor and a privilege to share this new venture with them and call them my colleagues.
So…welcome to Truth Radio 1340. We will stay focused on what’s happening right here in your neighborhood each morning, and bring you the talk you’re used to for the rest of the day with Beck and Rush and Hannity and Fox and all the rest.
Talk to you soon.
