Fight between man, Elkhart police officer causes community tension

Residents in a south side neighborhood of Elkhart say that there are increased patrols and excessive interactions from police officers in retaliation for an officer who was attacked and seriously injured in the area. A Chicago man now faces seven charges for an attack on the law enforcer July 3 along Garfield Avenue, which police reports said left the officer hospitalized.

Indiana storing more than 2.25 million infant blood samples for possible research

There are blood samples of every child born in the state of Indiana since 1991 in an Indianapolis warehouse, and their parents do not even know about it. The Indiana Department of Health has stored the samples for possible research, but health officials have now asked parents what they would like to be done with their children’s blood.

Experience Baseball helps Lost Boyz of Chicago enjoy the game, escape the violence

South Bend-based Experience Baseball helps at-risk youth through sporting events and community engagement, which is exactly what they did July 4 when they brought several boys to a Chicago White Sox-Seattle Mariners game and an Independence Day fireworks display. The organization was working in collaboration with Lost Boyz Inc., an organization started in Chicago’s South Shore neighborhood in response to the “surge of violence” among youth.

Census data breaks down Elkhart County marriages by race, age and sex

Slightly more than 50 percent of Elkhart County is married, which is slightly more than the percentage of people married in the state and the country. Most of the married population is made up of both men and women in the 55-64 age group. There were 38 marriage licenses issued to same-sex couples in the few days when they were able to do so after a judge struck down Indiana’s ban on gay marriage.

Notre Dame football single-game tickets go on sale July 10

Single-game tickets for the 2014 Notre Dame football season will be available online at 6 p.m. Thursday, July 10. Tickets will also go on sale at the Notre Dame ticket office and over the phone at 8:30 a.m. Friday, July 11. The first home game of the season will be against Rice on Aug. 3.
