There was food and music Friday night, July 4, at Mishawaka’s Independence Day celebration at Beutter Park, but the highlight of the night had to be the fireworks display. If you missed the show, you can watch it in our time-lapse video below.


STEM summer school helps kids engage more, principal says

Kids built popsicle stick bridges, straw rocket, marble roller coasters and Styrofoam cup towers for class Thursday, July 3. It’s part of Elkhart Community School’s first STEM-focused summer school, in which students learn by doing. It’s supposed to keep the kids engaged and allow them to think for themselves. There were a total of 160 students from several Elkhart elementary schools who attended this year’s summer school, which featured a curriculum from the Boston Museum of Science.

Indiana meth lab locations plotted on interactive map

Have you ever wondered if a property used to be a meth lab or a dump site? Well, the Indiana State Police has an interactive map which shows you which properties were previously used to cook the drug. It includes the dates and locations of the lab seizures, going as far back as 2007. The database also has further information about the type of lab, what items were found and if there were children under 18 years of age present during the seizure.

Power restored to 97 percent of I&M customers who lost service earlier this week

Power has returned to 97 percent of Indiana Michigan Power (I&M) customers who lost service earlier this week due to severe weather conditions, according to the electric company. That’s 99 percent of its customers in Indiana, which includes 99 percent of South Bend customers. I&M had to replace a total of 197 poles, 81 transformers and 140 cross-arms in both South Bend and Michigan as a result of the storms early Tuesday.

Elkhart woman remains in critical condition after motorcycle crash in Ohio

Nancy Schrock is still in critical condition Saturday, July 5, over a week after a motorcycle crash in Ohio, according to representatives with Miami Valley Hospital. She was traveling with her husband on a motorcycle down I-75 Friday, June 27, when the crash happened. Traffic slowed down in front of them, and they were unable to stop in time. Both were ejected from their motorcycle when her husband attempted to stop. Neither were wearing helmets.
