Elkhart's second phase of annexation passes city council vote

On Monday the Elkhart City Council voted to pass all four of the areas representing Phase 2 of its annexation plans, which aims to add 16 areas to the city.

Dozens of dissenters — the majority of whom were homeowners — addressed the council during the three hour meeting. Though some raised concerns surrounding water and sewer services, many simply flat-out stated they did not want to be part of the city of Elkhart.

New lunch program could mean free meals for more students

Five schools in Elkhart — Beardsley, Mary Beck, Mary Daly, Roosevelt and Woodland — qualify for a new USDA program that gives every student in those schools a free lunch.

The USDA touts the program, called Community Eligibility Provision, as a way to streamline paperwork at schools where kids are getting a lot of government aid.

RV industry output to rise 9 percent this year, expert projects

Richard Curtin, director of consumer surveys at the University of Michigan, released a forecast predicting recreational vehicle shipments will hit the industry’s highest mark since 2006 next year.

"The RV industry’s promising future is based on gains in jobs, incomes and household wealth," Curtin said.

New bike path, road improvements get Elkhart County's support

The Elkhart County Board of Commissioners voted Monday to fund the county’s portion of a bike path project on C.R. 15 from C.R. 6 to C.R. 10. The county will work on the path with the city of Elkhart, which is planning to do construction in that area this summer on a water main project.

The commissioners also approved several appropriations requests from the Elkhart County Highway Department including $700,000 from the Economic Development Income Tax fund to straighten the curve on C.R. 40 from C.R. 19 to C.R. 21. and to pave C.R. 17 from C.R. 40 to C.R. 142.

Concord wins first Elkhart sectional baseball championship since 2009

The Minutemen (15-15) edged Warsaw 2-1 to earn a spot in the LaPorte Regional by getting gutty pitching and timely hits. Concord wriggled out of a bases-loaded, no-out situation in the sixth and went on to hoist the trophy.

The Minutemen will meet Lake Central in the first semifinal at the LaPorte Regional on Saturday, June 7.
