Todd Stewart sentenced to 65 years in prison in Mark Miller murder

Todd Stewart, who was convicted for the murder of his business partner earlier this month, was sentenced to 65 years in prison Thursday morning, May 29, in Elkhart Superior Court. Stewart was arrested on a warrant in May 2013, six months after his business partner Mark Miller was found in a barrel floating down the St. Joseph River.

Heart sculpture honors Sarah Crane at Cleveland Elementary

An instructional aide at Cleveland Elementary designed and painted a large purple heart which now sits in front of the school in honor of Sarah Crane, an Elkhart teen who died of of cancer in 2013. The city of Elkhart rallied around Crane following her cancer diagnosis, creating the Sarahstrong campaign and promoting positive thinking. Cleveland teachers who taught Sarah and other students helped to decorate the heart.

Richard Gross gets 100 years in prison for Saleh's Market double murder

Richard Gross, who was charged in the double shooting during a robbery at Saleh’s Market in Elkhart, was sentenced to 100 years in prison. Gross received 50 years in prison for the deaths of Jagtar Bhatti and Pawan Singh. The sentences were ordered to be served consecutively. While he did not shoot either Bhatti or Singh, Indiana law states that a person committing a felony can be charged with felony murder if another person dies during commission of the crime.

Man accused of killing Anthony Botello Perez shooting appears for initial hearing Thursday, May 29

Miguel Angel Martinez-Villasenor, who was accused of fatally shooting 26-year-old Anthony Botello Perez, appeared for his initial hearing in Elkhart Circuit Court on Thursday morning, May 29. He will remain in jail without bond until his September trial. The Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department was called to the Deer Creeke apartment complex in Elkhart last March, where they found the body of Botello Perez inside an apartment.

Railroad crossing closures in Elkhart and Goshen start Sunday, June 1, 2014

There will be two railroad crossing closures in Elkhart beginning Sunday, June 1. There will also be eight railroad crossing closures in Goshen throughout the first week of June. Some of the closures may last as long as two weeks. You can find a map with further details here.
