The Elkhart Rotary Club honored Cpl. Cody Skipper and Cpl. Jason Tripp at its meeting Monday, April 28, for their actions during January's fatal shooting at the Martin's Super Markets on the city's northeast side.

The two Elkhart police officers were given plaques for going "above and beyond" on the night of Jan. 15, when they reached the grocery store within three minutes of the incident being reported. The officers fatally shot the shooter, Shawn Bair, in the heart just as he raised his gun to kill himself.

By the time the officers arrived at the store, Bair had killed Krystal Dikes and Rachelle Godfread – however, at a press conference on Jan. 16, Indiana State Police Sgt. Trent Smith said the officers' training and quick actions limited the number of casualties that night.

Sherman Hansen, assistant secretary of the rotary club, said the shooting, "changed the lives of everyone in our community." He said the officers "undoubtedly saved lives of more people in the store."

Hansen said the men were "honorary Rotarians" and exemplified "service above self" – one of the club's mottoes.

"We salute you. We are most humbled by your service to our community," Hansen said following a long standing ovation for the two men.

Skipper and Tripp's work and bravery during the shooting have been praised by many in the community, including Elkhart County Prosecutor Curtis Hill.

The two men went back on duty at the department on April 9.
