1. National Weather Service extends winter weather advisory and issues a wind chill watch
The National Weather Service of Northern Indiana extended its winter weather advisory into next week and issued a wind chill watch Saturday afternoon, Jan. 25.
The winter weather advisory will be in effect until 7 a.m. Monday, Jan. 27. The wind chill watch will last from Monday morning until Wednesday afternoon, the weather service said. Both of the weather service's advisories apply to the majority of northern Indiana, including Elkhart County.
2. Shakey's Night serves up chicken, mojos and memories
For the second year, volunteers with the Knights of Columbus cooked up memories for locals longing for the taste of Shakey's, a popular restaurant that once had two locations in Elkhart.
Around 1,200 people attended the event, which was held Saturday, Jan. 25.
3. Food for 8,000 families distributed over weekend
Roughly 3,000 volunteers at three locations across northern Indiana packed and distributed enough food for 8,000 families this weekend.
The annual food drop delivered boxes to families in Elkhart, Middlebury, Mishawaka, South Bend and LaPorte on Saturday, Jan. 25.
4. Elkhart man identified after fatal mill accident
Thirty-year-old Eric Rodman, of Elkhart, died in a work-related accident Friday, Jan. 24, while loading railcars for his employer, our news partner WNDU reported.
Rodman, who worked for Anderson's Mill in White Pigeon, Mich., lost his footing and fell into a hopper car while it was being filled with grain, WSBT reported.
5. Grand jury to convene to review Elkhart police-action shooting
A grand jury will convene on Monday, Jan. 27, to review an investigation into the police-action shooting of 31-year-old Christopher Ryckeart.
Police were pursuing Ryckeart, who was driving a car that had been reported stolen, when the shooting occurred. Ryckeart led police on a chase that lasted a little over 40 minutes and took them into Michigan, then back to Elkhart.
None of the three officers involved in the incident were injured, and all of them have been on paid administrative leave since the shooting.
