New Paris man in surgery after being struck by falling tree limb

NEWS PARIS — NEWS PARIS — A man who was injured when a tree limb fell on him Saturday morning, Jan. 18, is in critical condition.

New Paris and Goshen emergency units were called to the area near C.R. 19 north of C.R. 142 at about 9:33 a.m. to reports of a limb that had fallen on a man, according to an Elkhart County dispatcher.

Richard Borkholter, of New Paris, was cutting wood with Kirby Myers, a friend of his, when a tree limb fell and knocked him down but did not pin him, Bud Myers, Kirby Myers' brother said.

Borkholter was airlifted to Memorial Hospital in South Bend.

He was surgery early Saturday afternoon, a representative of Memorial Hospital said. He is now in critical condition.

Myers said Borkholter suffered from injuries to his ribs and vertebrae, according to a preliminary assessment.
