2. Teen involved in dog's fireworks death sentenced to prison time
Sixteen-year-old Marquis Gary was sentenced to a combined 17 years in prison Thursday, Jan. 16, for an armed robbery charge and felony animal cruelty charge. The latter stemmed from a July incident in which Gary threw a firework at a dog. The firework exploded in the dog's mouth, and it had to be euthanized.
Gary pleaded guilty to both charges in December.
3. Martin's Grocery Stores CEO releases heartfelt statement
As details of the shooting at Martin's Elkhart store began to emerge, the company's Facebook page was flooded with messages of sympathy and support.
Early Friday morning, Jan. 17, Martin's CEO Rob Bartels shared an equally heartfelt message on the company's Facebook page thanking the community for its loyalty. You can read it here.
4. County seeking survey responses on area's housing condition and needs
Local governments and housing agencies have teamed together with the Indiana Association for Community Economic Development to release a survey to county residents that will help identify the area's housing needs.
The survey will be available here until Feb. 15.
5. Candlelight vigil planned for victims of Martin's shooting
Community members have organized a candlelight vigil to honor the victims and survivors of the Martin's Super Market shooting.
"We just want to focus on the families," the organizer, who wishes to remain anonymous, said. "We don't need credit for it."
