ELKHART — The city of Elkhart has estimated the cost of managing the cleanup from the recent snowstorm at $179,074.
A statement issued by Mayor Dick Moore said the city compiled a list that includes costs for labor, overtime, equipment costs and the cost of de-icing materials.
The list was compiled by Robin Wenger, the city’s grant administrator, and was sent to the Indiana Department of Homeland Security in hopes of eventually being reimbursed as a result of the declaration of emergency from Indiana Gov. Mike Pence.
Last week, Pence declared a “state of disaster emergency” for 29 counties including Elkhart County.
Wenger said the city was encouraged to apply via Elkhart County, but said the chances of Elkhart being reimbursed is “very tentative.”
Elkhart County took the step of declaring an emergency during the storm that began Jan. 4 and left county roads difficult to traverse for several days.
At the time of the storm, Elkhart Mayor Dick Moore issued a news release urging motorists to use caution, but noted that the city had not declared an emergency.
The storm dumped about a foot of snow in Elkhart and coincided with arctic temperatures that included wind chill estimates of nearly minus 40 degrees.
Elkhart County officials have not announced a final cost associated with the storm.
