Antonio Davis clears snow along a sidewalk to open up an area in front of a fire hydrant at his mother-in-laws home on Wolf Street in Elkhart Friday, Jan. 10. 2014. Using sidewalks can still be difficult even if they have been cleared as snow removal on streets often pushes snow back into the sidewalk. (Truth Photo By Jennifer Shephard) (AP)

ELKHART — Mayor Dick Moore issued a reminder Friday, Jan. 10, asking residents and businesses to clear snow from fire hydrants.

City crews continue snow removal efforts, but Moore asked the residents pitch in to check hydrants and catch basins are clear of snow.

Hydrants should have a three-foot clearing around them to ensure firefighters can readily access them in case of emergency, Moore said.
