1. Funeral for fallen Elkhart soldier is today

The funeral for Army Ssgt. Jesse Williams, the soldier killed in a Dec. 17 helicopter crash in Afghanistan, is today.

2. Elkhart hospitals see uptick in flu patients

An increase in the number of flu patients at area hospitals could indicate that the peak of flu season is near.

Symptoms include a high fever, chills, sore throat or body aches. The sickness, health professionals say, should be taken seriously.

St. Joseph County Health Officer, Thomas Felger, said Thursday a St. Joseph County woman died of the flu, also know as H1N1 or Swine Flu. She was 25 years old.

4. Windchill could push temperatures well below zero next week

The high expected today will likely only reach 19 degrees.

But that will seem warm compared to Monday, when a frigid wind chill could push temperatures as low as negative 25 to 35 degrees.

Between now and then, folks in Michiana should expect a little bit more in snow accumulation and gusty winds.

5. Fire and Ice Festival in Goshen is today

Marshmallow roasting, ice sculpture carving and other activities will be held in downtown Goshen Friday for the 7th annual Fire and Ice Festival.
