Broken boiler forces Guidance Ministries to freeze operations

Guidance Ministries will put normal operations on hold until a replacement boiler part arrives from Canada.

ELKHART — Services to the less fortunate will be frozen until Guidance Ministries receives a new part for its boiler.

On Friday, Dec. 13, the heat exchange on the ministry's boiler failed, rendering it inoperable. As a result, Guidance Ministries pastor Lori King says that all but one of the normal services they provide will be cancelled.

Guidance volunteers were concerned about canceling the Christmas Outreach program, which enables less fortunate parents to select donated gifts for their children on Christmas.

“We just can't not give gifts to these kids — they won't have anything on Christmas morning,” said King.

Volunteers worked in spite of the cold to ensure that Christmas would not miss the children.

King said that the nearest replacement part was somewhere in Canada. Eight space heaters have been the source of warmth for Guidance Ministries volunteers while they wait for the new part.

While King hopes that it arrives within the week, King's biggest concern is the potential cost, since the replacement part falls just outside of the boiler's five-year warranty.

King also said that the damages came at a very inconvenient time, since donations decrease and heat bills increase during this part of the year.

“I'm just going to trust the lord,” King said, “The lord will take care of us — he always does.”

For donation information, contact Guidance Ministries at 296-7192. Checks or money orders can also be mailed to Guidance Ministries, P.O. Box 1494, Elkhart, or online at guidanceministries.com.
