NAPPANEE — More than 800 children in need will receive Christmas gifts this year due to the generosity of Nappanee residents.
Late last month, area residents prepared 821 shoe boxes filled with toys, school supplies, hygiene items and notes that will be distributed to needy children this holiday season.
The Nappanee collection was part of a nationwide drive run by Samaritan’s Purse that will distribute the boxes throughout the United States.
During the week of Nov. 18-25, residents prepared the boxes and took them to the collection point at Nappanee Brethren in Christ Church.
Then on Nov. 25, volunteers took the 821 boxes to the regional collection point in Niles, Mich. The 821 boxes from Nappanee became part of 28,070 total boxes collected in Niles.
Local collection of the gifts is now complete, but local residents can still pitch in if they wish.
By visiting samaritanspurse.org, those interested can “build” a shoe box online for $30.
