Free Thanksgiving meals offered at churches, nonprofit organizations

There are at least seven free Thanksgiving meals that will be served in Elkhart County.

ELKHART — Thanks to a few hundred volunteers, thousands of people in Elkhart County will fill their plates with roasted turkey, stuffing and buttery mashed potatoes for free in celebration of Thanksgiving.

Volunteers will spend the holiday serving free lunch and dinner at seven churches and organizations Wednesday, Nov. 27, and on Thanksgiving, Thursday, Nov. 28. Details for those meals are listed below.


Ÿ Susanna’s Kitchen at First Congregational Church, 431 S. Third St., will get a head start on Thanksgiving with lunch from 11 a.m. to noon Wednesday, Nov. 27. Call 522-5893 for more information.

Ÿ The largest Thanksgiving Day gathering will be at The Matterhorn, 2041 Cassopolis St., where more than 200 Elkhart Salvation Army volunteers will work with the restaurant’s staff to feed as many as 1,500 people from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. ADEC Inc. and Elkhart Community Schools will provide transportation from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. back and forth from six locations — Rosedale Apartments, Waterfall Highrise, the Salvation Army, Woodland Elementary School, Mary Beck Elementary School and Roosevelt Elementary School. Ÿ Faith Mission of Elkhart, 801 Benham Ave., will have two meals on Thanksgiving. Lunch will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Olive Garden has donated food for dinner beginning at 5 p.m. Call 293-3406 for details.


Ÿ Like Susanna’s Kitchen in Elkhart, The Window, 223 S. Main St., will have a Thanksgiving meal Wednesday, Nov. 27. Lunch will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. To learn more call The Window at 533-9680.

Ÿ Goshen First United Methodist Church, 214 S. Fifth St., will have lunch available from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day. For details call 533-9518.


Ÿ Pizza Depot, 104 S. Jefferson St., will offer a free Thanksgiving meal from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the dining room and for delivery. Call 642-4229 for more information.


Ÿ Nappanee United Methodist Church, 301 E. Market St., will have lunch from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thanksgiving. The church can be reached at 773-4183.
