Severe weather is brewing in the area and will likely result in a tornado outbreak, the National Weather Service (NWS) reported this morning.

A Particularly Dangerous Situation (PDS) tornado watch for all of Northern Indiana, Southern Michigan and Northwest Ohio was issued at 11:20 a.m. and the NWS expects it to last through 8 p.m.

The PDS notation indicates that the risk for extreme weather is very high.

high wind warning is in effect from 1 p.m. today, Nov. 17, through 1 a.m. Monday, Nov. 18, and wind gusts may reach up to 60 mph this afternoon.

The Indiana Toll Road issued a wind ban for the entire length of I-80/90 lasting the duration of the high wind warning. The ban affects triple tractor-trailers, long-doubles and high-profile oversize permit loads, with the exception of low-profile steel haulers.

“This has the potential to be a historic event in weather history for Northern Indiana,” the NWS Northern Indiana office posted on Facebook.

A tornado watch was issued for northeast Illinois and northwest Indiana at approximately 9 a.m. EST and is expected to last through 5 p.m. EST. The NWS expects that a tornado watch will be issued in Northern Indiana and parts of Michigan sometime today.

A tornado watch is issued when conditions are favorable for tornadoes to occur. A tornado warning is issued when a tornado or multiple tornadoes has been spotted. If a tornado warning is issued, people in the affected area should take cover immediately.

The NWS released the following tips for staying safe during severe weather:

Ÿ Don't ignore severe weather or tornado warnings.

Ÿ Plan ahead for what you will do in case of a tornado warning. If you do not have a basement or good shelter, make plans with family, friends or neighbors.

Ÿ If you see a tornado while you are in your vehicle, get out and lay in a ditch next to the road.

Ÿ If a tornado warning is issued, seek shelter immediately.
