Sign-up times for Christmas assistance program set

Elkhart residents who want to recieve holiday assistance from the Salvation Army can now register.

ELKHART — Registration is open for Elkhart families seeking holiday assistance through the Salvation Army.

To register for the Salvation Army’s “Adopt-A-Family” program, families should sign up at the Salvation Army, 300 N. Main St., between 9 and 11:45 a.m. or between 1 and 3 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12, through Friday, Nov. 15, and Monday, Nov. 18, through Nov. 22, and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Nov. 25 and Dec. 2.

Sign-up times for working adults only will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 18, Nov. 25 and Dec. 2.

Families are only eligible for adoption if they have not been adopted within the last five years. Adoptions are not guaranteed or promised.

To sign up, families must bring with them a current Indiana identification, Social Security cards for everyone in the household and birth certificates for all children age 14 and younger.

They must also provide proof of income, including payroll stubs, TANF or food stamp printouts, Social Security/SSI/SSDI printouts, utility rebates and any other form of income not listed, as well as proof of expenses including rent or mortgage receipts, utility bills such as electric, gas, water, phone and cable, car payments and any other expenses not listed.

Any single person or family not adopted will receive a car basket, gift certificate for groceries and a turkey from the Salvation Army. “Toys for Tots” vouchers will also be available.
