2013 Veterans Day: All the events and free stuff

Veterans Day is Monday, Nov. 11. Here is a listing of local events and free services honoring veterans.


Echo Taps

Student and adult volunteers organized by Echo Taps for the Heart will play taps beginning at 10 a.m. outside The Lerner Theater in downtown Elkhart on Monday. The group will parade to Rice Cemetery at 400 James St., where a ceremony will take place around 10:45 a.m.


There will be an 11 a.m. ceremony outside the Goshen Courthouse. The Goshen Honor Guard will play taps, fire rifles, and raise and lower the flag.

Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center

SJRMC will host a Veterans Day celebration at its Mishawaka campus at 11 a.m. Monday. The guest speaker will be U.S. Navy veteran Ralph Bakle, who was awarded a Silver Star and a Purple Heart during his time in the military. The building is located at 5215 Holy Cross Parkway, Mishawaka.

NorthWood Middle School

Veterans and their families will be honored at NorthWood Middle School’s annual Veterans Day celebration at 8 a.m. Monday. The speaker for this event will be local veteran Judge Evan Roberts. The Indiana Army National Guard will provide the color guard, and the student choir will sing patriotic songs and the national anthem.

Nappanee Elementary School

Veterans are invited to Nappanee Elementary School at 8 a.m. Friday, Nov. 15, for the school’s Veterans Day program. An assembly will begin at 8:45 a.m. in the school gymnasium.

Mary Beck Elementary School

A Veterans Day assembly will begin at 9:30 a.m. Monday. There will be several performances by students and others, and veterans will speak about freedom. At the end of the event, buglers will play taps in the parking lot. Veterans are invited to stay for cake and coffee.

Elkhart County Historical Museum

The Elkhart County Historical Museum will present a History of Military Uniforms program at 6:30 p.m. Monday. The museum will display uniforms and military items from its collection. These items include a drum belonging to Avery Brown, the youngest soldier to enlist in the Civil War; and a piece of Robert E. Lee’s flag of surrender. Veterans will be admitted free, and admission is $2 for all others. The museum is located at 304 W. Vistula, Bristol.

Free stuff

John’s Auto Spa

John’s Auto Spa in Nappanee will give free car washes to veterans and current military servicemen and women from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday. The business is at 2000 E. Market St., Nappanee.

Drive & Shine Car Wash

Drive & Shine Car Wash is offering a free diamond car wash to veterans and active duty military on Monday. Locations are 4340 S. Ironwood, South Bend; 5406 N. Main Street, Mishawaka; 2714 Cassopolis St., Elkhart; and 400 N. Nappanee St., Elkhart.

Miller’s Senior Living

Miller’s Senior Living in Wakarusa will offer a free meal to veterans between 7 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. Monday. The facility is at 303 N. Washington St., Wakarusa.

Papa Vino’s

The Mishawaka Papa Vino’s will offer a free entree to veterans and enlisted military personnel from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday. Those interested in getting the free meal should bring proof of military service. The restaurant is located at 5110 Edison Lakes Parkway, Mishawaka.

Martin’s Super Markets

Martin’s Super Markets will offer a free Honor Meal from the deli to veterans and active military personnel from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday. Those interested in receiving an Honor Meal should show their military identification card at the checkout. This year’s meal includes two pieces of deli chicken, a side of mashed potatoes, a side of cold salad, a roll, a deli beverage, milk, a serving of ice cream and a slice of cake, while supplies last. Meals are available for eat-in, and minimal carry-out packaging will be available. Stores are located in South Bend, Mishawaka, Granger, Elkhart, Goshen, Plymouth, Nappanee, Logansport and Warsaw.

Texas Roadhouse

Texas Roadhouse is offering a free lunch to veterans and active duty military from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday. Interested customers need to show a military ID or discharge papers. Texas Roadhouse is at 3015 Brittany Court in Elkhart and 4635 S. Michigan St. in South Bend.

McCarthy’s on the Riverwalk

The restaurant is offering buy-one-get-one free entrees to veterans on Monday. Customers must show military ID and mention the offer when ordering. McCarthy’s on the Riverwalk is at 333 NIBCO Parkway, Elkhart.

Yellow Cab

Yellow Cab of Elkhart County will give free rides to veterans on Monday. The free rides must begin and end within a three-mile radius of the county, or veterans may also get a discount of $7 off longer rides. The minimum ride price is $7.
